1894년도에 설립되어 100년이 넘는 역사를 자랑하며 런던 시장이 대학 총장으로 런던 시청사에서 City University 학위 수여식을 거행하였다. 국내외로 경영과 산업으로 전문적인 기구와의 연계를 자랑하고, 이러한 유대는 City 대학의 교육, 연구로 반영되고 있다. 캠퍼스환경: 런던의 금융중심가에 위치한 소규모의 대학교이다. 1997년 대대적인 보수공사를 마친 경영대학 내 시릴 클라인워트 도서관을 포함해 여러 도서관이 있으며 영국 도서자료공급센터의 자료를 포함한 국가적인 도서실 간의 대출 네트워크(inter-Library Loan Network)를 통해 자료를 열람할 수 있다. 또한 각종 시청각 장비를 갖춘 회의실도 다수 확보해 일반에게 대여활동을 한다. 그외의 교내 복지시설로 스포츠센터, 수영장, 보건소, 식당, 은행 등이 있다. 캠퍼스는 런던 중심부에 자리 잡고 있으며 히드로공항에서 차량으로 45분가량 소요된다.
