이 대학은 캘리포니아 주에서 가장 오래된 연구 중심의 사립대학교이다. 1880년 설립되었다. 현재 문리대학, 법과대학, 경영대학, 회계대학, 커뮤니케이션대학, 교육대학, 사회사업대학, 정책·기획·개발대학, 영화대학, 미술대학, 음악대학, 건축대학, 공과대학, 약학대학, 의과대학, 치과대학 등 20여 개 대학 및 대학원으로 구성되어 있다. 학부과정에는 95개 전공과 147개 부전공이 있다. 경영학, 법학, 사회사업, 의학 등 134개 분야에서 석사 및 박사학위, 전문학위를 수여한다. 부속기관 및 시설로 도서관, 의료원, 미술관, 자연사박물관, 라디오방송국, 체육관 등이 있다. 그리고 부설연구소로 경영학연구소, 신경유전학연구소, 한국학연구소 등이 있다. 최근 20~30년에 걸쳐 아시아태평양 지역의 많은 연구기관과 협정을 맺었으며, 다양한 분야에서 아주 활발하게 연구활동을 수행하고 있다. 제1캠퍼스인 유니버시티파크 캠퍼스는 미국 캘리포니아 주 남부의 로스앤젤레스에 있다. 이곳에는 공학관, 학생회관, 기숙사, 영화관 등 여러 건물이 있다. 그밖에 마리나델레이, 새크라멘토, 워싱턴, 앨라배마 등 여러 곳에 교육시설을 운영한다. 현재 20만 명의 졸업생이 활동하고 있으며, 그 가운데 약 75%가 캘리포니아 주에 거주한다. 그동안 학계, 재계, 문화예술계, 정치계, 체육계 등 각계각층의 저명인사를 많이 배출했다. 유명한 졸업생으로 우주비행사 닐 암스트롱(Neil Armstrong), 영화감독이자 제작자인 조지 루카스(George Lucas) 등이 있다.
