오늘 소개해 드릴 대학은 미국 주립대 순위 1위 UC버클리 입니다. UC 계열 10개의 학교 중 가장 먼저 생긴 학교로 모든 프로그램이 미국 최고의 수준입니다.

제가 학교를 방문 했을 때는 마침 가을학기가 시작하는 첫주였어요, 그래서 학생들이 굉장히 많았고 활기찬 분위기를 느낄 수 있었답니다.

2. 학교 소개

미국 최고의 주립대학으로 세계적으로 명성이 알려진 학교이다. University of California 계열의10개의 학교 중 첫 번째로 세워진 대학으로 현지에서는Cal이라고 불린다.

1868년에 창립된 버클리는20세기의 물리, 화학, 생물학을 이끌었으며, 플루토늄, 버클륨(berkelium), 로렌슘(lawrencium - 로렌스 국립 연구원에서 딴 이름), 캘리포늄(californium) 등의 원소가 발견된 곳이다.

2006년 기준으로 모두 합쳐65명의 노벨상 수상자가 버클리에서 학위를 받았거나 연구한 경험이 있고, 그중22명이 버클리에서 교수직을 역임하였거나 역임하고 있다.

현재는9명의 노벨상 수상자가 교수로 있다. 세계2차 대전 시에는 핵무기 개발에 중요한 역할을 하였으며, 반대로 이후1960년대의 미국 사회를 대표하는 자유 언론 운동(1964)과 베트남 전쟁과 관련한 반전 운동의 발상지로 유명하다. 이후로도 버클리는 인근의 샌프란시스코와 함께 미국에서 가장 진보적인 정치적/문화적 성향을 띠고 있는 곳이며, 1960년대 미국 전역을 강타하였던 히피 문화의 발상지가 된 것도 이와 무관하지 않다. 또한, 현대 과학 기술을 대표하는 인터넷, BSD 유닉스, 그리고 오픈 소스 등의 발전에 크게 기여한 곳이다.

참고로 일반인들에게 알려진 버클리 음대는 미국 동부 지역의 보스턴에 있는Berklee College of Music으로, 캘리포니아 대학교 버클리와는 별개의 단과대학이다.
