This is an exciting new development and builds on our existing range of communications based programmes. This new programme is designed to combine the critical study of cinema and photography with practice to explore the emergent field of convergent practice and to explore the boundaries between cinema and photography in the contemporary creative industries.
• This programme has been created to reflect key contemporary debates and offers a flexible structure that can respond to ongoing changes in thinking and practice.
• It provides a unique post-graduate experience in which students can develop their own contemporary, lens-based creative digital practice (still or moving image) within the context of exciting and evolving critical environments.
• It is suitable for anyone who works or wishes to work in the cinematic or photographic creative industries and wants to develop their contemporary/convergent practice skills, critical thinking, industrial and cultural awareness.
• It is for anyone with an interest in practice and the environment in which practice takes place, as well as those who are interested in a related research career, whether inside or outside academia.
• The international basis of the course also makes it suitable for non-EU students.
• The MA Cinema and Photography has two core modules: Cinematics and Photography and Cultures of Contemporary Photography • There are two choices regarding the major dissertation module – a written project or a major piece of practice as a final independent project.
• Students also choose two optional modules from a wide range available across the Institute.
The entry requirements are for a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent with preferably some background in lens-based or image practice to degree level or equivalent. Relevant professional or personal experience is also welcome and we will assess suitability through the submission of practical work and possible interview. Whilst no formal practice qualification is required for entry onto this programme, we want to ensure that students have the necessary technical ability to undertake it.
English language requirements
Candidates whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language is sufficient to meet the demands of their study. In particular, we require one of the following qualifications: An IELTS Band Score 7.0 (with not less than 6.0 in any skill area) or 2. Internet Based TOEFL 94 (with not less than 21 in Listening, 23 in Reading, 23 in Speaking and 24 in Writing)
